Ways to Diagnose Abdominal Cancer

Cancer specialist uses multiple tests to examine and discover about the seriousness of abdominal cancer. They perform various tests to know if cancer has spread to the other parts of the body. Through imaging tests, doctors get clearer pictures of tumors and abnormalities present within the body. While performing these diagnosing ways, doctors consider other factors including the sort of cancer, signs, symptoms, age, current health condition, and other aftereffects of prior clinical trials.  These are some of the best diagnosing ways to identify the spread of abdominal cancer to detect the seriousness of cancer.

Under this diagnosing procedure, an endoscope is used to inspect and see within the body. It is a thin, flexible, and light tube injected through the mouth, down the esophagus, into the stomach, and small bowel. While performing the surgery, the person may be sedated to make him/her calm, relaxed or sleepy, which, in turn, lets the doctor complete surgery without any interruption. The surgeon then removes a specimen of tissue as a biopsy during endoscopy. This, in turn, helping the surgeon inspect it for cancer signs and symptoms.

A biopsy removes a minimal quantity of tissue for examination under a magnifying lens, helping the doctor inspect the cancerous tissue. A specialist then breaks down the samples to perform tests and access cells and tissues to analyze and conclude the condition and seriousness of abdominal cancer.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography)

CT scan traces and clicks pictures of the organs and tissues inside the body using X-rays taken from distinctive angles. After a CT scan, the computer then combines all pictures into a detailed, 3-dimensional image showing all the tumors, abnormalities, and even minute details in precision. Apart from proffering fine details, a CT scan is also used to depict the size of the tumor to decide its seriousness. Sometimes, the doctor uses a contrast medium, which is a special dye applied before the scan, to get better fine details on the image.

Endoscopic Ultrasound

Unlike endoscopy, this process includes a small ultrasound probe on end. Here ultrasound is used to produce sound waves helping doctors to create a clear picture of internal organs. This, in turn, helps determine how far cancer has spread into the lymph nodes and stomach tissues, organs such as adrenal glands or liver.

It is performed by using a laparoscope, which is a flexible, lighted, and thin tube. A surgeon inserts this tube into the abdominal cavity to examine cancer spread to the abdominal cavity’s linings or liver.

PET or PET-CT Scan (Position emission tomography)

A PET-CT scan is a combined process to form inside clear pictures of organs and tissues in the body. Under PET scan, a tiny amount of a radioactive sugar substance is transferred to the patient’s body. After the injection of this substance, it is consumed by cells that use the most energy. The reason behind injecting is to find out the cancerous cells because they use more energy than other cells. Then a scanner is used to create images of those cancerous cells present inside the body.

Barium swallow

Under this surgery process, a person swallows a liquid containing barium, which lets doctors take x-rays of the individuals suffering from the pain. Then barium coats the linings of organs like the intestines, stomach, and esophagus. This process is performed so that all the abnormalities and tumors are easier to see on the X-ray.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Unlike X-rays, MRI uses magnetic fields to get clear pictures of organs inside the body to detect abnormalities and tumors. Before performing MRI, doctors use a special dye called a contrast medium to formulate fine images of the organs. This dye is injected directly into a patient’s vein. Apart from getting a clearer image of the abnormalities, it is also performed to depict the size of the tumor present inside the stomach.

These tests allow doctors to detect and treat all the abnormalities, tumors, and their spread. While performing these diagnosing surgeries, doctors make sure about your existing health conditions to avoid risk factors that may happen during the process.
